HAVERFORD, Pa. (AP) — Haverford College says a student used the school president’s name to send a hoax email about a purported change in financial aid.

The email wrongly states the selective liberal arts school near Philadelphia has adopted a need-blind admissions policy for illegal immigrants.

The Jan. 28 message was ostensibly signed by interim college President Joanne Creighton (CRY’-ton). But student activist Edward Menefee says he impersonated Creighton in order to “awaken the community” to the issue.

Admissions dean Jess Lord on Wednesday called the email “outrageous and really detrimental to the community.” He says it trivializes an issue that college officials have been discussing for months.

Lord says it’s unclear how many students, staff and faculty received the message, which was partially blocked because it came from a non-college account.
