First-Ever Lottery For Broad Street Run Entry Opens

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Registration opened at midnight for the first-ever lottery to enter the Broad Street Run.

The Broad Street Run has been around since 1980, and it's become so wildly popular that this year for the first time organizers have instituted an online lottery to get in. But, there's no need to run to your computer right now -- registration opened at midnight and it runs through February 15th.  And whether you register now or on the 15th, your chances of winning a coveted entry are the same.

In 2012, 34,000 runners finished the Broad Street Run. The 10-mile run takes place this year on Sunday, May 5.  There is a $40 entry fee.

The lottery this year comes after much frustration a year ago when, the Broad Street Run website crashed as registration opened.

There will surely be a lot of traffic on the web site at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19. That's when the accepted entries will be posted online.
