PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A two-day chess marathon wraps up Sunday in North Philadelphia.

The annual tournament helps to keep kids off of the streets.

The concentration is intense, at the annual Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge at Temple University.

240 students are competing for prizes, but assistant tournament director Amanda Robinson says chess also helps students develop critical decision making skills that are vital in the classroom.

“I think chess is a really strategic game and it helps you think a lot. So when the students are trying to do their homework they can concentrate more. They can learn to be strategic in certain ways,” says Robinson.

The tournament is coordinated by ASAP, the Philadelphia After School Activities partnerships.
