PennDOT Crews Hit The Highways To Keep Ice From Forming

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The snow may not last long, but the cold air is expected to linger which could cause problems on the roads.

"We have temperatures in the low 20's, so we need to make sure we keep the salt solution on the roadways," PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum said.

Blaum says the low Saturday night temperatures and snow could result in patches of ice, but the good news is PennDOT crews have been working since Friday, coating the roadways with a salt brine solution.

"We're going to be using 230 trucks and we'll bring in more trucks if necessary. And we'll be putting more material on the roadway as the snow falls to keep the roadways wet."

Blaum says drivers should drive with extra care, using reduced speeds, and if you see a salt truck, do not pass it. He says the best place to be is a distance behind the truck.
