Wilmington Teen Charged With Falsely Reporting Armed Robbery, Assault

WILMINGTON, DE. (CBS) -- New Castle County Police have arrested a teenage girl who they say falsely reported an armed robbery and assault early Monday morning.

18-year-old Tyana Bowens of Wilmington, Delaware was charged with falsely reporting an incident and criminal mischief after police learned that an armed robbery she originally reported never happened.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the alleged incident shortly before 1 a.m. along the 500 block of Homestead Road in the Alban Park apartments in Wilmington. When officers arrived, Bowens told them that she was walking home when three men jumped out from behind some bushes and attacked her and robbed her at gunpoint and knifepoint. She claimed the assailants demanded her money prior to one of the individuals striking her in the face and hand with a bottle, causing her to sustain a cut to her hand and contusion to her lip.

Bowens was transported to St. Francis Hospital where she was treated and released.

During the investigation, officers found several inconsistencies in Bowen's statement. After confronting her about her varying accounts of the incident, Bowen's advised the officers about what had actually happened prior to the their arrival to her residence.

Authorities learned that the injury she sustained to her hand was from her breaking a window with her fist after an argument with a former girlfriend.

Bowens was arraigned and released on $600 unsecured bond.
