TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Legislature’s Democratic leaders want the state to hire “integrity monitors” to prevent the misuse or waste of any of the billions of dollars in Sandy aid.

Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver said Friday they’ll introduce a bill that will spell out the exact responsibilities of the monitors.

Up to $30 billion in federal money is headed to New Jersey, in part for major reconstruction following the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy.

The legislative leaders say they want to work with the Christie administration to put the plan in place.

New York City has used monitors in the past, including to oversee the rebuilding of at the site of the World Trade Center.
