PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – There’s a new way for the charity-minded to hold a food drive, without lifting a bag or filling a box.
The Virtual Food Drive at Philabundance.org is just that, a way for groups of people to donate money to the cause online.
“It’s a really fun way for people to fight hunger. And it’s also a way to familiarize people with what’s really needed in the community,” says Philabundance spokeswoman Marlo DelSordo.
She says in lieu of gifts, people may encourage wedding or birthday party guests to donate to the virtual food drive.
“The idea is to get as many people on board, because collectively that donation will be larger and that impact will be larger,” she explains.
DelSordo says the need for food has increased 98 percent over the last three years, while donations have dropped off.
