PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Mayor Nutter says there’s no reason whatsoever that a civilian needs a military-style assault weapon.

As a big city mayor, and leader of the US Conference of Mayors, Michael Nutter says he is following the gun control debate.  And he’s taking sides, today stronger than ever:

“Not even the insane people at the NRA can put forward a legitimate explanation” for not limiting assault weapon ownership, he said at an unrelated event this morning.

He says his position is a reflection of actual events — in Newtown, Conn.; Aurora, Colo.; Tucson, Ariz.; and even in Philadelphia:

“Sergeant Stephen Liczbinski (see related story), and others.  We see last night that someone shot up a house in Wynnefield: 15 bullets, one citizen hit (see related story).

Nutter says the NRA is out of touch with reality.

“I refer to the NRA as not real astute,” he said today.

And Nutter says that ultimately the NRA leadership will “isolate themselves” in this gun control debate.
