COATESVILLE, Pa. (CBS) — A Chester County, Pa. man is behind bars today in lieu of $1 million bail, charged with the rape of a 13-year-old girl in late 2011.
Humberto Cervantes, 34, of Coatesville, is charged with felony rape and related crimes after the girl and her parents went to Bensalem police late in 2012.
Bensalem Township police sergeant Andrew Aninsman says Cervantes befriended the victim at a Pentecostal church in Trenton, NJ, where he was a deacon at the time. Aninsman says the two met a few times for walks in Bensalem parks.
“After several times of meeting, the last time the victim thought they were going to another park, where in fact the suspect took her to a motel in Bensalem and raped her,” Aninsman tells KYW Newsradio.
Not long afterward, Aninsman says, Cervantes began working as a deacon at the Apostolic Assembly of First Faith Jesus Christ Church, in North Philadelphia.
Police working with Chester County detectives arrested Cervantes on Wednesday. Sgt. Aninsman says the young teenager deserves a lot of credit for coming forward after a year and telling her parents about the assault.
