Local Expert Gives Tips On Homeowner Liabilities After Snowfall

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – It's the first significant snowfall of the winter season and folks in the Delaware Valley will have the weekend to enjoy the beauty it brings, but one local attorney wants to remind you with the beauty comes responsibility.

Managing partner of Lundy Law, Leonard Lundy, says you have to protect yourself from liability.

"In Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware a homeowner, and in particular the owner or lease, of a commercial property has an obligation within so many hours to clear what's called public thoroughfares of snow and ice," says Lundy.

That means pavements, walkways and driveways or, Lundy says, it's a common lawsuit.

"Many, many homeowners fail to properly clear pathways and they fail to salt the properties. Truthfully many people are seriously injured with broken bones or cut faces," Lundy explains.

He also reminds you while out shopping to check the ground beneath you before you get out the car because many people fall and become injured right in the parking lot.
