Weekend Box Office: 'Hobbit' Hangs Onto 1st Place For 2nd Weekend
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The box office leader made it two in a row at multiplexes.
The Hobbit remained a habit for a second straight weekend. Moviegoers continued to flock to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on its second weekend of release, to the tune of $37 million, giving it another easy, first-place finish.
That put it well ahead of the weekend's debuting attractions, which claimed four of the next six spots.
Jack Reacher, the thriller starring Tom Cruise , was second, with $16 million.
Judd Apatow's comedy, This Is 40, took third, with $12 million.
The Barbra Streisand-Seth Rogen comedy The Guilt Trip earned $5 million, good for sixth place.
And the 3-D version of the animated Monsters, Inc. was seventh, with just over $5 million.
All in all, it was a relatively quiet December weekend at multiplexes, but look for moviegoing traffic to increase on Christmas Day with the release of Les Miserables, Django Unchained, and Parental Guidance.
