PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Florida man was sentenced to five years probation for engaging in a scheme to sell approximately 6,000 boxes of counterfeit diabetic test strips.
Federal prosecutor Nancy Rue says defendant Jacques Duplessis, motivated by greed, imported the counterfeit test strips from suppliers in China and England and they made their way to the public.
“There were certainly people who got bad readings. There has been no indication that anyone was harmed as a result. But of course when you are dealing with a population that has a disease as serious as diabetes, it is really important to make sure that everything on the market for them is working properly,” explains Rue.
Duplessis pleaded guilty, but still maintains he was duped by his supplier.
