By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Crews are working to fix a 10-inch water main break that occurred in Fishtown early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on East Girard and East Montgomery Avenues.

The Philadelphia Water Department is working to replace the main. The intersection is closed from Susquehanna to Palmer on East Girard Avenue.

Officials report 10 properties are without water 10 homes near the intersection of Girard and Montgomery and two homes had flooded basements.

Water Department spokeswoman Laura Copeland says, "We're in the process of pumping out those basements as well as cleaning up the area. We have the utilities coming out to evaluate their infrastructure and then we'll begin repairing the main."

And that this is a not uncommon in the colder months. "We do have a lot of watermain breaks around the winter season. We gear up for this. We add more crews so that we can respond quickly."

She says anyone who experienced property damage as a result of the watermain break should call the hotline at 215-685-6300.

The scene of the ruptured main is right in front of the 26th police district building. Local detours remain in effect, so drivers should avoid the area if possible.
