Philadelphia Promoting Its Weeklong New Year's Festivities

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The New Year will begin "Philly style" -- with not one but two fireworks displays over the Delaware River.

And it's not just New Year's Eve.  Philadelphia is promoting a full week of activities leading up to  December 31st and the Mummers' parade on New Year's Day.

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter says the city's New Year's Eve celebration seems to get better every year.

"The dual fireworks shows, the Blue Cross River Rink, all of the events and activities from Christmas to New Year's Day," he enumerated.  "I don't know that any other city in America does it the way we do."

Sugarhouse casino is returning as sponsor of the 6 pm and midnight New Year's Eve fireworks shows over the Delaware River.   CBS3 will televise the midnight show, and KYW Newsradio 1060 will provide the musical soundtrack for both shows.
