Alcohol Abuse Killing College Students

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Alcohol abuse has become a major issue on college campuses.

A group called the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Association is trying to help because over 1700 college students die each year from alcohol-related injuries. More than 97,000 students are victims of alcohol-related sexual assaults and date rape and if you think the problems are kept on campus and far from you, don't be foolish.

According to estimates, in a typical year more than 2 million students drive under the influence of alcohol.
One of the major issues is advertising which can make alcohol look like an essential part of college life. It's very important that with these dangers, alcohol use not be glorified.

One of the particular problems that we find is that many people drink because they believe other students are drinking. They don't realize that sometimes the results and the statistics are skewed.
