STUDY: A Week At The Spa Is Good For Your Health

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A study published in the December issue of Integrative Medicine, A Clinician's Journal, finds a week at a spa is good for your health!

Physicians noted definitive physiological changes that occur after being in that environment.

Dr. Andrew Newburg says the small pilot study revealed changes.

"They all tended to lower their weight, their blood pressure went down and they had lower levels of metals in the body, so overall it seemed to have very beneficial effects," Dr. Newburg explains.

He points out it was a small group in a spa environment that used only the best treatments and that people should check with their physician before running off to the spa.

"People, for example, who have some underlying kidney disease or maybe are taking diuretics, this would be somebody you would need to be cautious about," Dr. Newburg says.

But he says more research is needed.

"We don't know if it was the diet itself...the colonic hydrotherapy...we don't know if it's just going to a beautiful place and getting away from all the stressors," he explains.
