Selecting A School

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Eighth grade students across the city are scrambling right now to apply to Philadelphia's public
high schools. The good news is that the School District recently extended its application deadline to November 30th so families have a little more time to make their decisions.

There is also a new website available to help all students and parents search, compare and choose a school - GreatPhillySchools.org - launched on October 15. The Philadelphia School Partnership created this resource with several nonprofit partners, including the Urban Affairs Coalition and The Philadelphia Public School Notebook.

GreatPhillySchools.org includes information and ratings on over 400 public, charter, private and parochial schools in Philadelphia.

The deadline to apply to transfer between the School District's neighborhood schools is now November 30th, while most charter and private school application deadlines are later this winter and early spring.

Parents and students can learn more about how to apply to different types of schools at GreatPhillySchools.org.
