Woman Shot, Killed In West Philadelphia

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early Saturday morning in West Philadelphia.

According to police, 22-year-old Zykia Sanders was shot once in the back near 45th and Market Streets, outside the West Park Apartments.

Police say she was found on the street and transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was pronounced dead about 2:30am.

The victim's grandmother, Barbara Sanders, says Zykia was always a good girl.

"My granddaughter didn't deserve this. She had a life ahead of her. She didn't deserve this!"

With five siblings, Zykia was set to graduate with her bachelor's degree in June. But all of her plans were cut short when, police say, they found Zykia lying on the ground in the 4400 block of Holden Street.

Barbara Sanders says she was lying in bed when she heard the news.

"I hear everybody hollering, 'They done shot Zykia, they done shot Zykia!,' so I started putting on my clothes."

No arrests have been made.  Officials do not believe Zykia was the intended target. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

The Sanders family is holding a vigil at West Park Apartments at 400 Busti Street at 6pm Sunday.
