Mayor Nutter Serves Breakfast To Homeless Veterans

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Today is the federal observance of Veterans Day and for the third straight year, Mayor Nutter put on an apron and served homeless veterans breakfast.

John MacDonald runs the organization, Impact Services, which works to get veterans off the streets and into permanent housing. He says it means so much to have the mayor here.

"You go from grabbing something out of a trash-can to eat, sleeping on a grate or under a tree or under a bridge, to be in a beautiful facility that's clean warm, a caring group of folks around, and then to have the mayor serve you breakfast – it means a lot."

The mayor will also attend services at the Korean War Memorial at 11 this morning at Front and Dock Streets.  There's also a ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial right across the street at 12:30 today.

And, one of the area's best known events, made famous by the late Harry Kalas, the Veteran's Day parade in Media will get underway at 11:11 this morning.
