Jay Lloyd's Getaway: 'Transition' Days

By Jay Lloyd

CARROLL VALLEY, Pa. (CBS) -- This time of year, some days feel like winter, and then right back into fall.

Here's an ideal "transition season" getaway that's less than a gas tank away.

Standing on the first tee at Carroll Valley Golf Course near Gettysburg, you can see rising to the left the ski slopes of Liberty Mountain.  Ahead, it's a broad, inviting fairway, in pristine condition , surrounded by the blazing colors of fall.

"The golf course is in as good a shape as it's been all summer," says Eric Flynn, who runs the dual purpose Liberty Mountain Resort that now encompasses Carroll Valley.

Close to the Maryland border, the resort provides two hotels: one at slopeside for skiers, and the other where you can step from portal to pro shop.

There have been days when visitors ski in the morning and tee off under the afternoon sun.

And right now, it's rock-bottom pricing for golf packages and days of easy meandering around the rolling hills of Adams County.

"This is among the most beautiful times of year to visit," Flynn says.
