RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Superstorm Sandy is now being blamed for 24 deaths in New Jersey.

The latest death involved a longtime municipal official in Hunterdon County who was struck by a car early Monday while working for a private company.

County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns III says 67-year-old William Hardenburg of Bethlehem Township was helping to clear debris from a Raritan Township home when he was struck around 9 a.m. He was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Kearns said equipment was being unloaded in front of the home when the accident occurred. No charges have been filed against the driver, who stopped at the scene.

Hardenburg had served for several years as Bethlehem’s emergency management coordinator.
