RADNOR TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — The Villanova Wildcats sit at 6-2 (4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association) after beating Georgia State on the road last weekend. Next up, a visit from the Towson Tigers on Saturday.
With three games left to play in the regular season, Villanova head coach Andy Talley likes where his team stands.
“We now have control of our own destiny,” Talley tells KYW Newsradio. “We have the winning season already done and now we can go as far as we want to go. We have a chance to win a championship within the league, we have a chance to be a playoff team with three games to go. The bad news is, you’re playing three of the best teams in the league in Towson, JMU and Delaware back-to-back (to-back).”
Listen To Podcast With Coach Andy Talley:
First off is the game with Towson. The Tigers came out of nowhere to win the CAA in 2011. Here in 2012, they are 3-4 (2-2 in the CAA) but two of their losses came to FBS squads LSU and Kent State. And they put a scare into the nationally ranked Tigers, losing 38-22 down in Baton Rouge.
“Grant Enders, their quarterback, is an all-league quarterback, but they’re primarily a running team,” Talley says. “But Grant can run the ball and he has explosive speed. He went (52) yards against Maine to win that game. Terrance West, their talented tailback, is a Division I-style running back. So they have two top players that we have to deal with.”
West and Enders lead a rushing attack that averages 194 yards a game and 5.0 yards a carry. Villanova’s ground attack is even better. They roll up nearly 270 yards a game on average, but Talley says they will have to earn it against the Tigers.
“Their defense is extremely physical, I would say the most physical defense, they and JMU, in the league. So we really have our hands full with this football team.”
Villanova leads the all-time series between the two schools 5-3. Tigers won last season’s match-up 31-10.
The Wildcats and Tigers will kick-off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
