Police Search Prompts Lockdown At 2 Camden County Schools

CLEMENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- Two schools in Camden County, New Jersey were placed in lockdown Wednesday due to a search for armed men in the area.

Authorities say the Albert Bean School in the Pine Hill School District was placed on lockdown at about 9:30 a.m. along with Clementon Elementary School in the Clementon School District after someone reported seeing men armed with gun enter a nearby apartment complex.

Police responded to the Mansion Apartments on Branch Avenue to investigate, but the men fled to a wooded area before they arrived. The two schools nearby were placed on lockdown while police investigated. Police called off their search and the lockdown was lifted just before noon.

Clementon School District Superintendent Lynn Marcus posted a message on their web site alerting parents of the "Tier 1" lockdown after being notified of the incident by police. In the statement, the district said everything was functioning as usual within building and the students were safe.

The incident remains under investigation.
