The Benefits Of Dark Chocolate

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There is no doubt that dark chocolate helps protect the heart, but why? There have been numerous reports looking at this.

A study out of Yale has some very interesting findings. According to the researchers, dark chocolate may also boost the function of vital endothelial cells that line the inside of blood vessels. Cocoa is rich in a group of antioxidant compounds called flavonoids which are also found in fruits and vegetables, wine, and green tea.

It is the flavonoids which protect the heart. The thing you need to know about dark chocolate is that it should only be eaten in moderation to get those benefits.

A chocolate bar a day is too much.
