Police: Officer Opens Fire On Suspect In South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition after he was shot by an officer in South Philadelphia Tuesday night, according to authorities.

It happened near South Hemberger and McKean streets at about 5 p.m. Police say after being chased by the officer southbound on Hemberger Street, the suspect pointed a gun at the officer.

The officer fired, according to police, striking the man three times in the leg and once in the buttocks.

There is no word on why the suspect was being chased. Police say a revolver was recovered from the scene.

The officer has been placed on desk duty while an investigation by Internal Affairs and the District Attorney's Office is
conducted.
