BLOG: Free Event for Families with Special Needs

By Jim Donovan: I wanted to let everyone know about a free event that is coming up that may be of interest to those of you who are caring for a child, young adult, or parent with special needs.

On Saturday, October 13th, Devereux, a leading nonprofit behavioral health organization that supports many of the most underserved and vulnerable members of our communities is holding a FREE day-long conference - Overcoming the Odds: Promoting Resilience for Families with Special Needs.

Judith Warner, New York Times best-selling author of We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication is the featured speaker. In addition Devereux staff will be able to assist attendees with

•appropriate school placement
•managing parents' and siblings' needs
•medication decisions
•advocacy
•planning for the future
•legal and other issues

Again, the date is Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM.

Supervised child care will be available on site.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Also a shuttle will be available from SEPTA's Rosemont station to the conference for those using public transportation.

Please mention any child care needs, including special needs, when registering.

The Please Touch Museum will offer children's activities.

This conference is offered free of charge to the community in celebration of Devereux's 100th Anniversary.
