'House At The End Of The Street' And 'End of Watch' Are Tops At The Box Office

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Movie box office improved ever-so-slightly this weekend.

New releases attempted to pump a little early-autumn life into the recently dismal box office as the three top spots went to movies making their debut and two of them in a virtual tie for first place.

The new horror thriller, House at the End of the Street, with Jennifer Lawrence and the debuting police thriller, End of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, each earned a modest $13-million, according to studio estimates, tying them for the top spot.

The new baseball-themed father-daughter drama, Trouble with the Curve, with Clint Eastwood, was close behind with $12-million.

Rounding out the top five were holdovers Finding Nemo 3-D, with a total of $9-million, and Resident Evil: Retribution, with $7-million.

Overall, it was not much of a rebound, with industry-wide totals nearly 30-percent lower than those of a year ago.
