21 Dogs Removed From Illegal Breeding Operation In Mayfair

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Pennsylvania SPCA has announced the removal of almost two dozen dogs from an illegal breeding operation in Mayfair.

The 21 animals were removed from the 4300 block of Benner Street in the Mayfair section of the city, and included Jack Russell terriers, Shih Tzus, labs and a beagle. Some of the dogs, which included 11 puppies, were ill or were exposed to dogs that were ill.

The owners of the animals, 34-year-old Kristie Mitchell and 27-year-old Daniel Carlin, were charged with 42 counts of animal cruelty.

Police say Mitchell has had other brushes with the law, and pleaded no contest to animal cruelty charges in 2009 and guilty to others in 2010. They also say that at least seven other dogs have died at the residence recently.

The dogs are currently at the PSPCA undergoing treatment and evaluation before being put up for adoption. They are all expected to recover.
