PHILADELPHIA (CBS)- Sandwiched between summer vacations and holiday gatherings, fall may not seem like a prime time to travel, but those who hit the road can find some great deals. So 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan has advice on finding fall getaways on a budget.
It’s not the most popular time for a vacation, but fall can be a great time for a getaway on a budget.
“After Labor Day weekend, before the Thanksgiving holiday, when the crowds are at a minimum but the temperatures are still mild and hotels are looking to fill their rooms so travelers can take advantage of great deals from Orlando to Las Vegas,” says Jeanenne Tornatore, Senior Travel Editor at Orbitz.
In addition to big travel destinations, the experts at Orbitz say the Caribbean can be a fall bargain.
A getaway to an east coast beach town can also fit into a budget too.
“Places like Charleston, South Carolina, all these busy east coast towns all the way up to Martha’s Vineyard, you’re not going to see the crowds because it’s not 80-90 degrees outside anymore,” according to Tornatore.
For big cities like New York or Chicago, Tornatore recommends that you head for hotels in the financial district on weekends.
“They’re full of business travelers during the week and prices are at their peak. On the weekends, however, these hotels are looking to fill their rooms. So the leisure travelers that will come in will save more by staying in these business districts rather than staying in the theater and shopping areas,” she says.
You’ll also find that booking packages that include airfare, hotel and rental car, can also trim some costs. If you need a little bit more time to plan I recommend looking for deals at the beginning of December.
Since many people save up the last of their vacation time for the Christmas holidays, hotels, airlines and cruise lines usually have amazing deals the first two weeks of December.
