Two Philadelphia Area Communities Among Best In Country For Young People

By Chelsea Karnash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Two nearby communities have been named among the top 100 for young people.

The annual competition, held by America's Promise Alliance and ING, honors communities across the nation for their efforts in improving the lives of young people. In the Philadelphia area, Council Rock and Abington School District made the cut.

The contest is part of the Grad Nation campaign, a movement dedicated to ending the dropout crisis with the goal of raising the national high school graduation rate to 90% by 2020. The 100 communities selected as the best for young people have a collective average high school graduation rate of almost 80%, as compared to the current national average of 75.5%.

Nominations came from more than 320 communities in all 50 states as well as D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Council Rock is a first-time winner while Abington School District has made the list six times.
