Back-To-School Tech Tips

By Ian Bush

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With back-to-school time quickly approaching, we're taking a look at some tech items for your student that won't break the bank.

If the budget doesn't allow for an iPad, but a tablet is still on the shopping list, CNET.com senior editor Dan Ackerman suggests Google's Nexus 7.

"For $199, it's a lot better than all the other $199 tablets out there. You can use it as an electronic textbook reader, you can take notes on it in class."

Think you can get away with no printer? $80 might change your mind.

"Epson has an NX430, and it does scanning and printing, and you can connect it to your Android device or your iOS device and print straight from there."

Ackerman recommends waiting until Windows 8 comes out to buy a new laptop, but if you can't.

"You will get either a discounted or a free upgrade coupon, so you're not going to be totally left out."

For downtime, there's the Logitech wireless boombox to stream tunes from your phone. The Roku HD and Apple TV do the same for video -- all for under $100.
