READING, Pa. (CBS) – The day started out picture perfect, but just after 5 p.m. on Sunday evening, severe thunderstorms quickly rolled through the Pocono Raceway.
“I didn’t see anything but a flash and people laying on the ground,” said Tom Rinaldo, of Reading.
Lightning touched down twice. Officials say nine people were injured and one person was killed.
“Unfortunately, a member of our Raceway family, a fan, has passed away,” said Pocono Raceway President Brad Idalsky.
Officials confirm that fan was 41-year-old Brian Zimmerman of Moosic, Pennsylvania.
Witnesses say he was standing by his Dodge Caravan when he was struck by lightening and immediately collapsed to the ground. Zimmerman was pronounced dead an hour later.
