Platform Helps With Funding For Creative Projects

By Molly Daly,

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Locally-based singer-songwriter Cliff Hillis will play a show at World Cafe Live on Wednesday in support of his newest album "Dream Good."

Hillis raised money for the album through Kickstarter, a funding platform for creative projects.

Kickstarter allows friends and fans to kick in money for an artist's project, in Cliff's case as little as ten bucks.

"Basically, I said 'hey, everybody, if you could help out covering the cost of printing some CDs up and getting the stuff mastered, I'm going to record and mix the record myself. And then it went so wildly well that I was able to afford to get Brad Jones, in Nashville, who I'm a huge fan of, to mix the record," explains Hillis.

The result is a bracing mix of melodic originals that grab the listener's attention from the opening song, to the last.

"Somebody had sent around Woody Guthrie's New Year's resolutions from 1942, and one of them on there was Dream Good. So I ended up the next day writing the title track, which is "Dream Good," Hillis says.

Cliff Hillis plays World Cafe Live Wednesday, August 1st. Find out more here.
