PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Next year, low-cost Spirit Airlines will begin flights out of Philadelphia International Airport.
Spirit Airlines is planning four non-stops a week to Dallas-Fort Worth starting next April, with daily flights in June of 2013. At an airport news conference, Spirit spokeswoman Misty Pinson said the airline saw an opportunity.
“There are high prices between those two markets and we feel that we can come in and offer a lower fare.”
Rina Cutler, the deputy mayor for transportation, welcomed a low-fare carrier.
“It really is targeted at a very specific market and that market share continues to grow,” said Cutler.
US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher wouldn’t comment on how Spirit’s entry may affect fares on Philadelphia’s largest carrier.
“We’ll compete vigorously, as we do with every other carrier in the local market currently.”
Along with Virgin America and Alaska Airlines, Spirit is the third airline to announce new service in Philadelphia this year.
