Area Residents Flock To Senior Centers To Find Relief From Heat

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The heat is causing an increase in attendance at area senior centers.

The Philadelphia Senior Center on South Broad Street has extended hours during this heat wave.  Director Victoria MacKenzie Lynam says they're open until 6pm and they're encouraging folks to be mindful of the weather.

"Of course we remind folks to drink plenty of fluids while they're here," Lynam advises. "Wear light clothing."

Those who visit the senior center say they're thankful to have a place where they can cool down during the hottest hours of the day.

(Senior 1): "When you're in here you forget how it is outside."

(Senior 2): "If you don't have central air, this is the place."

(Reporter): "What do you do when you go home and it's hot?"

(Senior 3): "I sit with no clothes on! (laughing)"

Lynam points out sometimes seniors have air conditioning, but they are reluctant to use it because of the cost.  She says this is not the time to try and save some money, and if you're using a fan to cool down, make sure you have a window open.
