Bear Spotted In Vineland, New Jersey Tree

By Diana Rocco

VINELAND, N.J. (CBS) -- A black bear cub perched in a tree high above a house on Howard Avenue caused quite a stir Friday afternoon.

"This never happens in Vineland," said Julie Lopez. "I look up bear and there's a bear in a tree."

Police say the bear may have been wondering through town with his mom and two other cubs when they were separated.

"Starting last night and into the day today, there have been multiple reports of bear sightings and we've only found this one," said an officer.

Crowds gathered on the street to catch a glimpse of the animal.

Police and Animal Control contained him, but at one point the 200-pound cub jumped from the tree onto the roof of a nearby house.

Tara Batson was inside when she heard a big thump.

"It was a pretty big bear," said Tara Batson, who was surprised to learn the animal was only a year old.

Eventually it climbed back into the tree.

Officers from the Fish and Game Commission eventually arrived on scene to get the cub out of the tree to return him to the wild and see him free.
