Bridgeport Couple Accused Of Near Starvation Of Six-Year-Old Son Held For Trial

BRIDGEPORT, Pa (CBS) -- A Montgomery County judge ordered a Bridgeport couple held for trial on Thursday on all charges for nearly starving their 6-year-old son to death.

A King of Prussia family doctor testified he took $20,000 out of his pocket and offered to pay for gas so Victor and Olaifa Ramos could drive their son to CHOP immediately for treatment. He told the court he had never seen a child that sick.

The couple is facing numerous charges including aggravated assault and child endangerment. Defense attorney Keir Bradford-Grey says these parents did nothing that rises to the level of a crime.

"What we have seen is that these parents have been actively taking care of their children," she says. "There is no starvation. As you heard from the testimony, they were feeding their child several times a day."

Bradford-Grey says they are a caring, nurturing couple making their best effort to care for their child.

Prosecutors claim the boy weighed just 29 pounds and was near death when he was admitted to the hospital. They contend the parents failed to get him the necessary medical treatment.
