PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The famous movie Rocky, which has been the inspiration for spontaneous bouts of running up the Art Museum steps, is being screened tonight at 9pm — for free!
You ask, where at? Well, where else? At the steps of the Art Museum.
City representative Melanie Johnson says the Rocky movie screening, which has become a staple of the city’s annual “Wawa Welcome America” festivities, is a major crowd pleaser.
“People come out to this movie in hundreds and they really love that night on the art museum steps and seeing this film there,” Johnson said.
She says no matter how many times people have seen the film, there’s always a crowd ready to watch it again.
What makes the movie so popular in this city?
“You know, Philadelphia, it’s a very interesting city. We are an absolutely wonderful world-class city, but the only people that don’t know it sometimes are Philadelphians and I think the Rocky story speaks to that underdog mentality that we sometimes have being between New York and Washington,” Johnson explained.
