PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — More people are visiting Philadelphia than ever, according to a new report by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation.
The report says 38 million Americans made Philadelphia their vacation destination last year. That’s a record, according to GPTMC president Meryl Levitz (in photo).
“Even when the economy is not so good, Philadelphia is doing well because people see it as a viable alternative to fantasy trips and going abroad,” she said.
Levitz told a tourism luncheon at the Barnes Foundation that this year’s newest marketing effort is called “With Art, Philadelphia.”
And PNC Bank president Bill Mills says art is a natural draw:
“I’m a great sports fan. I mean, when you listen to the opportunities at all the museums that are going on, and you see the visitors, it dwarfs any other industry,” he said.
Levitz adds that her agency’s nationally recognized social media presence helps to entice specific audiences to visit.
