PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The animated animals continue to rule.
The sequel, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, made it two weekends in a row on top of the Hollywood food chain, earning an estimated $35 million in its second weekend of release for another first-place finish.
Prometheus, the science fiction thriller, claimed second place for a second straight weekend as well, taking in $20 million.
The weekend’s two new attractions also finished among the top five over Father’s Day weekend.
Rock of Ages, the adapted eighties rock musical featuring Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin, took third by opening with $15 million.
The holdover, Snow White and the Huntsman, took fourth by earning $14 million.
And That’s My Boy, the new R-rated fatherhood comedy with Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, took in $13 million, good for fifth place.
Overall, industry-wide totals were well below those of the counterpart weekend last year.
