Police Officer Wounded After Being Attacked By Dog In Wynnefield

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Philadelphia police officer was attacked and injured by a Rottweiler on Sunday afternoon after a routine traffic stop turned violent in Wynnefield.
The incident took place around 4 p.m. after police pulled over a car near 56th Street and Wynnefield Avenue.
According to police, that's when at least one man inside the vehicle ran into a home at 2417 North 56th Street. As officers followed, attempting to make an arrest, a family member inside the home released a Rottweiler to attack the officers.
Police say the dog bit the left wrist of one of the police officers, three other officers opened fire, killing the dog.
"The dog was obviously doing what dogs do," said Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. "They went into attack mode. Unfortunately, my officers did what they have to do and put the dog down."
The officer who was bitten was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was treated for the wound to his wrist. He was expected to be okay.
Police say they took several people inside the house into custody. They say at least one of those people was inside the vehicle from the initial traffic stop.
