Philadelphia Public Schools Closing Early Monday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia schools will close at noon, Monday, because of anticipated high temperatures and humidity, according to the School District of Philadelphia.

All Philadelphia public schools, including early childhood programs will dismiss at 12 p.m. After school activities are also canceled.

"It's going to be very hot in the school buildings, and a great many of them do not have air conditioning,"  said School District Deputy Chief Communication Officer Evelyn Sample-Oates. "It's difficult, of course, for kids to learn in an environment where it's very hot, it's very humid -- they can't focus -- so we thought the best decision for our children was to close schools early on Monday at noon. "

Routine transportation will be offered at the earlier dismissal time and school staff will remain on site until students have left or been picked up.
