UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run of a young girl on a bike in Delaware County on Thursday evening.
The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on Powell Road in Upper Darby.
According to investigators, the incident began when the driver struck an eight-year-old girl who was riding on her bike. They say he stopped for a brief moment, noticed the crowd of witnesses, and sped off. An Upper Darby police officer witnessed the incident and began pursuit of the red Nissan Altima.
Authorities say the driver blew through several red lights before officers were able to pull him over.
The driver was taken into custody, and during a search of his vehicle, investigators say, they found empty packets under the front seat believed to have contained heroin.
The young girl was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with injuries that included a fractured femur and shoulder, although she is expected to survive.
The driver, who is facing several charges, including assault and leaving the scene of an accident, is identified by authorities as Sukhjinder Singh.
Blood tests were pending, but Singh was being held in lieu of $200,000 cash bail.
