By Elizabeth Hur and Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police are investigating the deaths of two young children in the Tacony section of Philadelphia.

Police say a mother is suspected in the death of her twin babies, an 18-month-old girl Eve and boy named Adam, before attempting to take her own life – inside their home in the 6800 block of Ditman Street.

The woman, police say, is suspected of strangling one twin and drowning the other. She is also suspected of giving her 4-year-old daughter prescription pills. That child was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children where she is in stable but guarded condition as of 10 p.m. Thursday night.

Police say the 41-year-old mother attempted to take her own life by cutting her wrists. She was admitted to an area hospital but when she is released, she is expected to be charged accordingly, police said.

Neighbors tell Eyewitness News the woman works as a nurse at an area hospital and the father of the children is a correctional officer.

Police say he was coming home at the time and he called 9-1-1. He went in for questioning.

Philadelphia homicide detectives are investigating.
