PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A burst 10 inch water main sent water cascading along three blocks of the Main Street business district beginning around 3:30 p.m.
Owners of more than a dozen businesses along the 4400 block of Main between Green Lane and Levering in Manayunk watched with concern, some piling sandbags on the pavement, as the water rose knee-deep in some spots before the leak was finally shut off 90 minutes later.
Once cigar store did suffer water damage. The owner said he was busy trying to clean up an inch of water in his establishment.
Fortunately, officials said, most of the other restaurants and shops along the busy stretch of Main Street had no major damage.
With traffic detoured off the three affected blocks, business owners waited to reopen while crews from the Water Department with a front-end loader and a dump truck scooped mud and water off the street.
