PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A group of people stood on the field at Citizens Bank Park; it was hard to tell who they were. They varied in age, sex, style and color and could have been accountants, dentists or administrators. But they were teachers.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, the Phillies and the Inquirer honor outstanding teachers — submitted through a competitive process by students, families and colleagues. Ten winners are recognized during a Phillies home game.

As one of the judges for this annual event, I am struck not only because of what I learn about good teachers, but about the nominators.

This year it was clear that some teachers inspired their students so much, that years later into adulthood, former students took the time to tell the public how some of these amazing people changed their lives…and gave them confidence to be successful in their fields.

Occupational rankings don’t put teachers at the top; maybe they should be. Think about it.
