Actress Mariel Hemingway Discusses Suicide And Depression

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Actress and author Mariel Hemingway was in Philadelphia this past week, talking about her family's tragic history with suicide and depression.

Mariel Hemingway may be best known as an actress, but she's also an author of a few books promoting a healthy mind, body and spirit. She appeared as part of the "Minding Your Mind" speaker series in Ardmore.

Seven people in the Hemingway family have committed suicide, sometimes because of depression.

"It's not the first family that has had to deal with all this tragedy and all that stuff and so for me, it's OK, because also, on a good note, the family was also very creative and sometimes that goes hand in hand."

Hemingway wants to help people see that lifestyle can effect depression.

Hemingway has also set up a Facebook page titled "You Matter. Don't Quit" aimed at helping teens facing depression.
