Celebrating Israel's Independence Day, From Tel Aviv to Bryn Mawr

By Hadas Kuznits

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (CBS) -- Today is the 64th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, and a Jewish Day school in Bryn Mawr was celebrating.

At Barrack Hebrew Academy, Rachel Gordon, president of the Israel Club says the celebration of Israel's 64th Independence Day is a huge event for the school.

"Because it's a homeland for the Jews, and it's a miracle that we have it, and so many people fought hard for it," she says.

Dr. Sigal Strauss, coordinator of Israel programming at the school, says there was lots to do.

"We have sessions with Israeli-related themes, folk dancing, games, military drills."

This celebration on the Hebrew calendar follows a solemn day of programming for Israeli Soldiers' Remembrance Day.
"I think Israel is the only place in the world where you go from a memorial day to an amazingly happy day," she says.

Adds Gordon: "That's what allows us to celebrate Israel, so it reminds us to never forget these people that gave their lives.  It's for this celebration for the life of Israel."
