Every Wednesday we profile another place to play. Today we visit a private club in Chesterfield, NJ: Old York Country Club.
I could refer to this as the NEW Old York Country Club, because there is a lot going on at this place.
The big news involving Old York is its new management contract with Talamore, so this becomes the fifth member of the Talamore Family of Clubs (Talamore, Applecross, Old York, and two in the Pinehurst NC area — Talamore Golf Resort and Mid South).
The deal is when you join one, you have membership privileges at them all.
At Old York, it also means that the club is now being run by people who know their stuff inside and out. Talamore and Applecross are enjoying healthy times in large part due to the facilities, shared costs, and a wide range of membership levels that fit just about anyone.
They’re also pouring money into Old York, in the words of General Manager Jack Lutz, “to bring it up to the standards that people are used to at the Talamore Family of Clubs.” Course improvements include a softening of some of the mounds and bumps created by architect Gary Player. The idea is to help lower maintenance costs, make the course a little more playable in spots and more asthetically pleasing. Off course, renovations include a brand new mixed grill, and improvements to the back patio and bridal areas.
Ed’s Scouting Report
Usually on these play days I give you a little insight on my favorite hole, local knowledge, etc., but today I’m deferring to the club… and you. That’s because Old York features special preview days that allow you to check it all out for yourself, including a round of golf for $60. That also gives you access to the clubhouse and dining room.
Ed Abrams anchors mornings on KYW Newsradio, and you can hear his Golf Reports there on Fridays and Saturdays. He has also created a pair of websites: www.DealTrackerGolf.com, featuring leads on the best golf equipment deals… and www.TeeItUpPhilly.com, with video course tours, audio swing tips and local golf deals
