PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A “Donors are Heroes” party is being held this week in honor of Organ Donation Awareness Month.
The event is being held Friday at the Four Seasons Hotel in center city Philadelphia, and Cynthia London, the mother of an organ donor, says it’s a party that raises funds for awareness about organ donation.
“Sipho was tragically killed on March 25th, 1997, and he was declared brain dead. And in the end, we ended up donating his organs and six other people benefited.”
She says up to 50 people can be saved from one organ donor, and she understands it’s a topic that can be difficult to discuss.
“Nineteen people die every day waiting for an organ, and it’s real important that we help those that are waiting because it’s really not about those that have already been given something and also those who gave; it’s about those who are waiting,” she says.
